After college (B.A. in English from Williams College/ Williamston, MA) and graduate school (M.A.T. from Wesleyan University/Middletown, CT) I began a secondary school teaching career that spanned 43 years, the first 9 in public education and then 34 years at Phillips Academy, where over those years I taught English, coached ice hockey and cross country and track, and served as a dean for 10 years and English department chair for 8 years.
