Writing is my third career. Becoming an executive secretary was a lofty goal for this post-WWII farm girl who began first grade in a three-room schoolhouse. I was a top secretary in Washington, DC, and New York City. Then I read Betty Friedan’s Feminine Mystique. “A woman is more than John’s wife and Jimmy’s mother; she has her own contributions to make to society.†My self-image was transformed. I had always been a voracious reader. Where might focused reading take me?
Ten years later, with a doctorate in sociology from Duke University, I began my second career on the faculty of a liberal arts college.
My husband began this novel in the mid-1970s, but gave up after drafting a few chapters. Following his death six years ago, I found his notes in the desk drawer and began exploring its possibilities. That led me into a steep learning curve as a wordsmith.
I am not an “old lady who lives with her cat,†but I do share my home with my feline, Muezza.
